FFA231 W8 ( MECHANICS OF MOTION) : CHARACTER ANALYSIS (SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS)

Subject     : FFA231 (Mechanics of Motion)
Semester  :  FF115 III B
Exercise    : W8 ( Character Analysis )

Instead of having an acting class like we usually do, we're having a screening of animation movies! Instead of Toy Story, most of us picked an old animation movie called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Since I've watched Toy Story before and never even watched the Snow White, this would be a good chance for me to check on the first America's first feature-length animated film, as well as the first in the Disney Animated Canon.

SNOW WHITE
 - AND THE SEVEN DWARFS -

Since I've mostly been exposed to Walt Disney's animation movies by my parents (mostly my father) when I was little, which some of them are TarzanLilo and StitchBeauty and the BeastAladdinThe Lion King and my most favorite, Treasure Planet, even after I've grown while being accompanied by this various cartoons and animations, I've never even had the slightest intention of want to watch Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs

Without the slightest intention of wanting to watch it doesn't mean that I did not know that it ever existed. Who would have thought that this animation that is produced in the year 1937 would be the first animation by Walt Disney that is produced in Technicolor.

Even my all-time favorite video game, Kingdom Hearts, have Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs world inside it, as one of the Walt Disney's worlds that we can visit. This made my curiosity and eagerness of want to watch the animation increases. And that is also why I think this would be a great opportunity to watch the animation while relaxing ourselves a little after we done our pile of assignments.

Kingdom Hearts : Snow White's Station

And I think all of us are enjoying it as well.

- PICK A CHARACTER YOU LIKE -

Never said that this would end with just watching the animation movie only. We are then being given a task by the lecturer to choose a character in the movie and analyze it using these questions given:

  •  Who is your chosen character?
  •  What are the character's traits?
  •  What is the character's role?
  •  What is the character's goal?
  •  What is the character's fear?
  •  What are the character's exaggerated characteristics?
  •  What is the character's relationship to others?

Since I think most of us would pick the most standing out characters like Snow White, one of the Seven Dwarfs, or maybe the Evil Queen, that would be a little boring and less unique. So let's pick...

This guy.

  • Who is your chosen character?

Seen as the only reptiles in the group of the forest animals, "The Turtle" is one of the forest animals that are accompanying Snow White in the forest as the major characters and protagonists.

Seen as a turtle who can never seem to catch up, is being the most significant of the forest fauna. The turtle is always a step behind the other animals. Knowing the fact, however, it never seems to give up on following its friends and continued to walk, until it reaches where its friends are at.

It is also known as the European Pond Terrapin (Emys Orbicularis), a long-living freshwater species of turtle.

  • What are the character's traits?
The Turtle is portrayed as a slow, yet determined turtle. Wherever its friends go, it follows, even though how we typically see how slow a turtle is compared to most of the other forest animals.

It is the only reptiles that are in the group of forest animals, while most of them are consists of mammals and birds. If the connection between Snow White and The Forest Animals are meant to emphasize the princess's isolation, then the same goes for The Turtle, emphasizing it's isolation because of its speed.

The turtle can be seen as a  lonely character, as for how it is being emphasized inside the animation movie. It is being considered as one of the forest animals, yet it always been left behind when unexpected things occur and being the last in everything when it comes to moving from a place to another.

Unfortunately, The Turtle always gets run over by the forest animals. So, a shell is always a convenient thing for a turtle to have as it can hide in its shell to keep itself safe.

  • What is the character's role?
The Turtle, same as the other animals in the Forest Animal group, is one of the major characters and protagonists in the animated feature film. Its role is to protect and help Snow White throughout the film.

Snow White, whom it makes it its priority, always follows Snow White wherever she goes, even though The Turtle always seems to be left behind as it is the slowest in the group. It also seems to always follow Snow White requests, as to be seen it helps Snow White cleaning the Seven Dwarf's cottage.

  • What is the character's goal?
Reaching the finish line, obviously. Wherever the other animals are, it'll be the finish line for the Turtle. To be there with the others are his continuous goal. A loop that the Turtle always trying to reach.

Although we can see that the Turtle occasionally reached where its friends are, things just happen so fast for it as the Turtle would mostly get run over by the others. That moment when we felt so bad for the turtle who finally makes it to the top of the stairs then falls down.

  • What is the character's fear?
To be left behind. The inability of being together with the others.

It's either it continues to chase them, or being left behind so far it will be too late for the Turtle to chase them.

  • What are the character's exaggerated characteristics?
If you asked the Magic Mirror, on the wall, "Who is the slowest of them all?", the answer would be this guy. Well, he is a turtle, and all the turtles are typically slow. The film really exaggerates this point so much that the Turtle can be seen as the ones who always being the last one when they are going somewhere and being left behind.

  • What is the character's relationship to others?
Being the only Reptiles in the Forest Animals group, the Turtle is one of the Forest Animals that help and protect Snow White throughout the Film. Seen as it always walks together with the others (although it always being left behind), the Turtle seems to be working together pretty well with the others in certain tasks.

Snow White is the only human character who seems able to speak to the animals, even the Turtle, whom they make Snow White as their priority to protect and help throughout the film.

The animals are primarily used to justify many of Snow White's lines; rather than talking to herself, she is addressing the animals as her friends.
